Hiking Tâmpa Mountain from Brașov Old Town — Routes, Tips and Views
The trailhead is a 10-minute walk from Piața Sfatului. Here's everything you need to know about hiking Tâmpa — the two main routes, how long it takes, what to bring, and why the view from the BRAȘOV letters is worth every step.
One of the most unusual things about Brașov is that a forested mountain rises directly behind the old town, and the trailhead is a 10-minute walk from Piața Sfatului. Tâmpa Mountain — at 960 metres, the peak immediately above the city — is covered in dense beech and oak forest, criss-crossed with marked hiking trails, and home to the famous BRAȘOV letters visible from across the city. For guests staying on Strada Michael Weiss, the ability to have breakfast in a café and be on a forest trail within 20 minutes is one of the more extraordinary features of being in this particular part of the city. This guide covers Tâmpa and the best hiking options around Brașov, from a quick morning climb to full-day mountain routes and cave excursions.
Tâmpa Mountain — The Routes
There are two main routes to the Tâmpa summit, both starting from the base of the mountain behind the Weavers' Bastion on Strada Castelului — a 10 to 15-minute walk from Piața Sfatului through the old town.
The direct summit route, marked with a red dot, is the most straightforward — a well-maintained forest path climbing steadily through the beech forest to the summit plateau in around 45 to 60 minutes depending on your pace. The path is clear and well-signed throughout. The ascent is moderate rather than strenuous — the gradient is consistent but not steep, and the forest cover makes it pleasant even in summer heat. At the top, a clearing opens to reveal the BRAȘOV letters mounted on the hillside and a viewing platform with an exceptional panorama over the city, the Bârsa Plain and the surrounding Carpathian ridges.
The longer forest circuit, marked with a blue stripe, takes a more gradual route around the eastern flank of the mountain before ascending to the summit from the north. This adds around 30 minutes to the climb but is more varied in landscape and less busy on weekends. The same route can be used for descent, creating a full circuit of around 2.5 to 3 hours that covers most of the Tâmpa forest. A small café operates at the summit platform in season — cold drinks and basic snacks are available.
The BRAȘOV letters at the summit are at the same altitude as the viewing platform — you are standing level with them, not looking up. The view back down over the old town's red rooftops from this point is the best in the city.
The Tâmpa Cable Car — For Non-Hikers
The telecabina Tâmpa cable car runs from the base station near the Weavers' Bastion to near the summit, covering the ascent in 4 minutes. A return ticket costs 25 RON for adults and 15 RON for children. The cable car operates daily from around 9:30am to 5pm, with extended hours to 7pm in summer. On weekends and during peak season, queues at the base station can be 20 to 30 minutes — hiking up and taking the cable car down is a popular combination that avoids the queue on the way up.
Piatra Mare — The Best Full-Day Hike Near Brașov
For a more serious hiking day, Piatra Mare — the Great Stone — is the best mountain in the immediate Brașov area for a full-day excursion. The massif rises to 1844 metres southeast of Brașov, around 20km from the city centre, with a distinctive rocky summit plateau offering 360-degree views across the Bârsa Land, the Bucegi range and the distant Fagaraș ridge. The main trailhead is at Timișul de Sus village, reachable by train from Brașov station in around 20 minutes — a great advantage for those without a car.
The classic route from Timișul de Sus climbs through forest before emerging on the rocky upper plateau, reaching the summit in 3 to 3.5 hours. The trail is marked with a red stripe and is well-maintained throughout. The full circuit including descent takes 6 to 7 hours at a comfortable pace — a proper full-day hike with a genuine sense of elevation and wilderness. Bring water, snacks and layers — the summit plateau is exposed and temperature drops quickly if clouds move in. No entry fee.
Piatra Craiului — For Serious Hikers
Piatra Craiului — the King's Stone — is a narrow limestone ridge rising to 2238 metres around 30km west of Brașov, and is considered by many Romanian hikers to be the most beautiful mountain in the country. The main access village is Zărnești, reachable by train from Brașov station in 35 minutes for around 12 RON. From Zărnești, the Zărnești Gorge trail — a 2-hour walk through a dramatic limestone canyon — is accessible without specialist equipment and makes an excellent half-day excursion for any fitness level.
For experienced hikers, the Piatra Craiului ridge traverse is one of the most rewarding multi-day routes in Romania — the narrow crest walk above 2000 metres, with vertical drops on both sides and views extending to the Fagaraș and Bucegi ranges, is genuinely spectacular. The ridge requires a good level of fitness, proper hiking boots and ideally an overnight stay at Cabana Piatra Craiului hut at 1470 metres. The national park has no entry fee and the trail infrastructure is well-maintained.
The Zărnești Gorge is one of the best short hikes near Brașov for any fitness level — 2 hours through a limestone canyon, no specialist equipment needed, and accessible by train from Brașov station for 12 RON.
Râșnov Cave — The Best Cave Near Brașov
Peștera Râșnoavei — Râșnov Cave — is a 1200-metre limestone cave system located directly beneath Râșnov Fortress, around 15km from Brașov old town. The cave was discovered in 1949 and has been open to visitors since 1955, making it one of the most accessible show caves in the Brașov region. The guided tour covers around 500 metres of the cave system and takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes, passing through chambers with stalactites, stalagmites and cave formations developed over millions of years. The constant cave temperature is 8 to 10°C year-round — bring a light jacket regardless of the weather outside.
Entry to Râșnov Cave costs around 30 RON for adults. The cave is open daily from 9am to 5pm and combines naturally with a visit to Râșnov Fortress directly above — both sites together make an excellent half-day excursion from Brașov. Getting there requires a car, taxi or the Bran bus from Autogara 2, which stops in Râșnov town centre around 1km from the cave entrance.
Dâmbovicioara Cave — The Most Dramatic Cave in the Region
For a more dramatic cave experience, Peștera Dâmbovicioara near the village of Dâmbovicioara, around 60km from Brașov in the Piatra Craiului foothills, is one of the most visually impressive accessible caves in Transylvania. The cave is located at the end of the Dâmbovicioara Gorge — a spectacular narrow limestone canyon that is itself worth the drive. The guided cave tour covers around 400 metres and takes 45 minutes, with large chambers, dramatic speleothems and an underground stream in the lower section.
Entry costs approximately 20 RON. The drive from Brașov takes around 1 hour via the Bran road. The combination of the Dâmbovicioara Gorge walk, the cave tour and a stop at Bran or Râșnov on the return makes a very full and varied day out from the city. This route is best done by car as public transport to Dâmbovicioara village is limited.
The Bucegi Plateau — For a High Mountain Experience
The Bucegi Mountains — visible from Brașov old town and from the Tâmpa summit on clear days — are accessible from Sinaia, 45 minutes by train from Brașov. The Bucegi plateau at 2000 to 2500 metres is one of the most dramatic high-mountain landscapes in Romania, with open grasslands, rock formations including the famous Sphinx and Babele, and views extending in all directions across the Southern Carpathians. The gondola from Sinaia to Cota 2000 costs around 60 RON return and takes 20 minutes, making the high plateau accessible without serious hiking effort.
From the Cota 2000 station, a well-marked trail leads to the Babele plateau and the Sphinx rock formation in around 1.5 hours — a straightforward walk at altitude with exceptional views. Bring windproof layers even in summer as conditions on the plateau change quickly. The combination of the Sinaia train journey, the gondola and a 3-hour loop on the plateau makes an excellent full-day excursion from Brașov.
The Bucegi plateau is accessible from Brașov via a 45-minute train to Sinaia and a 20-minute gondola — no car needed, exceptional high-mountain scenery, and you are back in Brașov for dinner.
Practical Tips for Hiking Around Brașov
For Tâmpa specifically, trail running shoes or sturdy walking shoes are sufficient — the paths are well-maintained and the terrain is not technical. For Piatra Mare, Piatra Craiului and the Bucegi, proper ankle-supporting hiking boots are strongly recommended. The Brașov area is brown bear country — bears are present in the forests around the city including on Tâmpa — so hiking in a group, making noise on the trail and carrying bear spray on longer mountain routes is sensible. Bear encounters on Tâmpa and the popular trails are rare but not unknown.
The Muntii Nostri app and Maps.me both carry detailed trail data for all the routes mentioned in this guide, including offline GPS navigation — download the relevant maps before you leave. Romanian mountain trails are marked with coloured symbols on trees and rocks following the international system: red, yellow and blue stripes and dots indicate different routes. The Salvamont mountain rescue service operates throughout the Brașov region — the emergency number is 0SALVAMONT (0725826668) and should be saved in your phone before any mountain excursion.
For guests staying on Strada Michael Weiss, Tâmpa is the one hiking option that requires no planning whatsoever — put on your shoes, walk 10 minutes to the Weavers' Bastion, and you are on the trail.
